Good things to know before we get together
FAQ
To help you better understand our advantages and options, here are a list of questions that most new customers ask in their first meeting with us. If you have a question not listed here, contact us and we’ll get an answer to you right away.
Capna Labs was formed in 2013.
Of course. Capna Labs is licensed in California and New Mexico, and fully complies with all
state and local regulations.
Ethanol is the perfect balance between CO2 and butane extractions. CO2 extractions are safe, yet
very inefficient because it delivers low yields and leaves unwanted plant constituents in the
oil. Butane is more efficient, but can be highly dangerous to work with, and is harmful if
accidentally ingested. Capna Labs has developed a method of ethanol extraction that not only
delivers the safety of CO2 and the efficiency of butane, but elevates quality and consistency as
well. Contact us to learn about these and many other benefits.
Capna Labs works with a variety of clients from many categories in the cannabis industry,
including vapes, edibles, concentrates, tinctures and cultivators. Contact us for more
information about how we’re assisting key brands such as The Bloom Brand, Mad Cow Genetics and
many others.

The yield from extraction and distillation entirely depends on the quality of the plant
material. There are many factors that affect yield, several of which involve how well the plant
material is preserved once the material is trimmed. One way to determine the yield from
extraction is to test the THC percentage of the material to be used.
Given that our Ethos line from Capna Systems extracts at a 98.6% efficiency rate, the test results of your material should reflect what you can expect from extraction. Keep in mind that the plant material must be consistent from the sample sent for testing to the actual extraction. Once the plant material is extracted, the distillation process depends on the quality of the oil. However, we typically see an average loss of just 25% to 30% from extraction to distillation.

Our sister company, Capna Systems, supplies all of our equipment, and offers the same
leading-edge ethanol extraction technology for sale to producers and organizations. Click here for more information.
Distillation is a process adopted from the alcohol and other industries. It’s used to remove
impurities from concentrated oil, and works by separating components in the crude oil based on
their boiling points — with a focus on isolating the cannabinoids. The pigments, flavonoids,
terpenoids, etc., are fully removed in favor of the THC oil. The result is a clear, often bright
yellow, concentrate with a TBC content that ranges from 85% to 95%. This YouTube video will help you learn more.
Winterization is a mid-tier step required when extracting via CO2 or butane methods. It removes
unwanted waxes from the oil by mixing the crude oil with ethanol, heating the liquid to remove
the residual solvent, then freezing the mixture for 24-48 hours before filtering out the waxes
as a final step.
All of the ethanol extraction technologies developed by our sister company, Capna Systems, perform winterization in-line, so a separate process is not required. This is the technology also used by Capna Labs, so our clients can avoid the serious time and cost that winterization requires.
